Obituary for Frances Merewether

Frances Merewether was born in Ellis County, Texas in 1926. She resided in Santa Maria, CA for 31 years. She passed away peacefully at home on June 17, 2018, two weeks after a serious stroke.

She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Annie Jarratt, her husband Gerald, and her companion Bill Myshrall. She is survived by her sons Eugene and Ray, his wife Ellen and their two children Gene and Zoe.

Frances touched countless lives through her nursing career and her volunteer work. She graduated from the Parkland Hospital nursing school in 1946, and practiced nursing for 25 years. One outstanding accomplishment of her career was establishing the first coronary care unit in the state of Oklahoma. She was named Oklahoma Nurse of the Year in 1969 for her work in the areas of cardiovascular disease and for her political activities.

After she retired, she was a dedicated leader and volunteer in several organizations, including a grief support group and a gerontology study group.

Her family will honor Frances with a very small private family gathering.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Frances' personal caregiver Grace, and to Dignity Health Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to The American Heart Association, to Dignity Health Hospice, or to a charity of your choosing.
