Obituary for Guadalupe "Lupe" Cortez

Guadalupe “Lupe” Cortez, 94 of Santa Maria, CA passed away peacefully after a brief hospitalization on January 27, 2018. Lupe was the last surviving child of parents Adolfo and Transita Castro. Lupe’s father worked throughout California during the railroad construction in the early 1900’s but moved his family to Mexico in the 1920’s where Lupe was raised along with her many siblings. Lupe shared many stories with her children and grand-children of growing up in Mexico living a simple life and working hard, but always surrounded by a large loving family. She often talked about how much she loved growing up in the countryside and enjoyed being surrounded by beautiful green hillsides and lakes where she recalls playing with her siblings.

Lupe returned to California as an adult in the 1960’s settling in Santa Maria where she and her loving husband Santiago Cortez pursued a better life for their children working in the farming industry for many years and later helping their children with their own family run agricultural businesses. Lupe had many dreams and interests she wanted to pursue but often would put those on hold in order to always put her family first. She worked hard and was a strong woman who persevered through the good and bad times. She modeled the way and instilled in her children a strong work ethic and belief that through hard work, faith in God and a can-do attitude one can accomplish anything. Lupe’s strong Catholic faith and love for the Lord shaped her into being a person who never hesitated to lend a helping hand or offer her unconditional love and support. She was a devoted wife; mother, aunt, and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her large family the Lord blessed her with. She enjoyed cooking and making fresh homemade corn tortillas on a daily basis. Her greatest joy was to have a dinner table full of her family and friends where she took pleasure to serve her many tasty dishes. Lupe’s hobbies include stitching and crochet, composing music, playing the piano and organ, singing, and gardening. Lupe’s love for composing resulted in one of her songs (“El Corrido de los Gutierrez”) being recorded by Mexican music band “Los Fugitivos” and to this day it is widely played throughout Latin America. Lupe’s presence, love and support will be truly missed.

Lupe is survived by her six children, which include sons Antonio and Benjamin Cortez, daughters Maria Ramirez, Faustina Blanco, Virginia Cortez and Laura Mejia. She is also survived by 36 grandchildren, 77 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren. Que Dios te bendiga Abuelita!

Lupe is preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings and her husband of 72 years, Santiago Cortez.

Visitation will be held at Dudley Hoffman Mortuary on Thursday, February 1st from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by recitation of the Rosary from 6 to 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 2nd at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 966 West Orchard St., in Santa Maria with burial to follow at the Santa Maria Cemetery.
