Obituary for Joy Ruth Erb

1930-2018

Joy Ruth Erb entered into Eternal Rest to be with her Loving God on July 30, 2018. She left her earthly home in San Luis Obispo, CA, following a lengthy illness.

Born in Bonham, Texas, on May 14, 1930, to Mary and Charles James, Joy was the youngest of 12 children born to hard-working share-croppers. As a result of the Dust Bowl years, young Joy moved to California with her parents when she was six years old. She returned to Texas for her senior year of high school and graduation.

She met and married Leo Edwin Erb in 1949 in Southern California. Together they loved and reared four daughters and three sons. In 1967 Joy and Leo moved their family north to Camarillo, CA, where they finished bringing up their 7 children.

Converting to Catholicism prior to her marriage, Joy was a devoted member of several parishes, including St. Hilary Catholic Church in Pico Rivera, CA for over 10 years; St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Camarillo, CA for 33 years; Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Hemet, CA for 3 years, and most recently St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Santa Maria, CA.

An avid gardener and reader, Joy passed her love for gardening and reading on to each of her children.

One of the first licensed childcare providers in Ventura County, Joy loved and cared for a significant number of youngsters in the Camarillo area. Her career spanned over 30 years in both Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.

Joy was preceded in death by her husband Leo in September 2010, her parents, sisters and brothers, and several nieces and nephews, as well as a number of loyal, well-loved pets.

Joy is survived by her daughters Rose Raab (Larry), Patricia Beckman (John), Loretta Sexty, Therese Jennings (Michael) and sons William Erb, Daniel Erb (Marilou) and George Erb (Philomena).
In addition, Joy is survived by sixteen grandchildren: Oscar, Marissa, Nicholas, and Hillary; Jenny and Emily; Jared and William; Chelsea and Mica; Darcy, Chrissy and Jeremy; Lauren, Johnathan, and Michael. GG Joy also leaves behind fourteen precious great-grandchildren with another on the way.

Joy's children are grateful for the loving care given their mother at Bob and Corky's Care Home, with special thanks to Joel, Christine, Paula, Ana, Crisele, Brenda, Nellie, Pisa, Joline, Debra, Cassidy, Marly, Tessa, Andy, and Dana. Thanks also to Colleen, Jennifer, Beth, Les, Camille, and Ashlyn of Central Coast Hospice for their assistance while Joy was in hospice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 10, 2018, at 1:30 p.m., at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 414 East Church Street, Santa Maria, CA 93454, followed by interment at Santa Maria Cemetery. A reception at St. Mary’s Church parish hall will follow interment.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society or to any Veterans’ organization.
