Obituary for Manuel Dutra Silva

1928- 2018

Manuel Dutra Silva, 89, of Santa Maria, CA passed away on April 5, 2018, of natural causes. Manuel was born in Santa Maria, CA on October 31, 1928, to Manuel and Mary Silva of Casmalia, CA. The family also resided on farms near Orcutt and Guadalupe until he made his permanent residence in Santa Maria, CA. Manuel attended grammar school at Bonita School and graduated from Santa Maria High School with the class of 1948.

After graduating from Santa Maria High School, Manuel worked for Point Sal Farms until joining the United States Army. He served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1952, receiving a Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Cross. He returned to Santa Maria and went to work for Coast Rock under the ownership of Jake Will. He worked as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement in 1993.

Manuel enjoyed working on equipment, whether it was a piece of farm equipment, building a car or buggy, and even to the extreme of building an airplane which believe it or not, actually made it off the ground!! He also enjoyed playing music. He was a guitar player, accompanying the love of his life, his wife Hilda, on the mandolin, in the group called the "Silvernotes" playing the Chamarita and other Portuguese favorites.

He had some famous sayings like "one day at a time", "what’s free", "Merry Christmas", whether it was really Christmas or not, and "taboom" which means "that's good".

Manuel is survived by his two children: Manuel T. Silva and Kathleen Reasner; Alan Reasner, Lynnette Silva, five grandsons: Steven Mohr and wife Tricia, John Silva, David Silva, AJ Reasner, and Scott Reasner; and great grandchildren: Alexis Mohr, Steven Mohr, Jr., and Tyler Reasner. He is also survived by his brother Joe Silva, numerous nieces and nephews, and very special family friends.

Manuel was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Hilda, parent s Manuel and Mary Silva, and
si st er Constance Silva.

Visitation will be held Monday, April 9, 2018, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm with recitation of the Rosary at 6pm at Dudley Hoffman Mortuary,

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at 10:00 am, at St. Louis de Montfort with Fr. Ed Jalbert officiating. Burial will follow at Santa Maria Cemetery, with a reception following.
