Obituary for Roy A Murphy

Roy Murphy was born in Dorchester Massachusetts on January 9, 1921 the
first of eight siblings of William & Isabelle Murphy. With his wife Barbara
he retired to Santa Maria from Tiburon in 1992. With his wife they played
golf at the Santa Maria Country Club for twenty years. He resigned Boston
University to join Remington Rand tabulating maintenance division in
1941. After several months in the New York office he returned to Ilion, New
York for advanced training. When Pearl Harbor happened he was assigned
to the Los Angeles office. In 1944 he joined the Navy and became an
aviation radioman. After a very active flying duty he was discharged in 1946
and returned to his job at Remington. After becoming area supervisor he
transferred to the sales department as a system analyst and in 1951 became a
salesman. When Remington acquired the Univac company he became a
branch manager of tabulating machine sales.
He and Barbara married in November 1964. In 1965 he joined Data
Products Corporation as Los Angeles Branch manager. He then moved to
San Francisco as regional manager. An associate at Data Products started
Data Card in Minneapolis. In 1971 he joined Data Card as southeast region
manager in Atlanta. When they acquired the Troy Printer company in Santa
Ana and he became national sales manager. During which time he
convinced the Treasury department in DC to change from printing
government checks with IBM punched cards to print paper checks with
printers that could magnetically encode the check numbers and eliminate the
need to keypunch the returned checks. In 1981 he founded Ramstar
Corporation in San Francisco which developed an advanced high speed
check printing system which was sold nationally to bank form suppliers and
companies that processed high volumes of checks from multiple banks. The
system could encode the bank identifier without changing check forms. Roy
retired with his wife who sold Angiers her ladies dress store in Tiburon
where they lived for seventeen years.
After a life of extensive traveling Roy liked to say that Santa Maria was the
best place in the country to retire. Besides playing golf at SMCC they played
around the country in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Spain and Ireland. Roy was
preceded by his wife Barbara who passed away in March 2013, He is
survived by his son Michael Murphy and spouse Terry of Ketchum, Idaho,
brother Bill Murphy, Lynn and Colin Bowles- Jenner, Thomas and April
Murphy all living in Largo Florida.
A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 11:00am at St Louis de Montfort Catholic Church with burial to follow in the Santa Maria Cemetery.
