Obituary for Lionel H. Senes

Lionel H. Senes, 62, passed away on Sunday, December 30th, 2018 (Final Voyage) at his home in Arroyo Grande, CA. His Celebration of Life Service will be held this Saturday, January 12th from 10am-1pm at Oak Park Christian Church in Grover Beach, CA. with a reception to follow at Me and Z's Restaurant in Arroyo Grande from 1pm-3pm.

Lionel was born on November 30th, 1956 in Kew Gardens New York to Yolande and Henri Senes, French immigrants who met in the US after the war and became proud US citizens. He grew up on Long Island NY and spent summers with extended family in the south of France. He graduated from Floral Park Memorial in 1974 and later from Kings Point US Merchant Marine Academy in 1978. He went on to become Captain of the SS LNG Aries, a liquefied natural gas tanker with ETC and had a successful and adventurous career as a merchant marine for 20 years. While overseas in Nagasaki Japan in 1981, he met his wife, Dana, a California native. They married in 1982 and went on to raise three children and were later blessed with three beautiful grandchildren. After retiring from life at sea, Lionel also had a second career as a Safety and Emergency Response Specialist at the Conoco/Phillips66 refinery in Santa Maria CA for 17 years, where he actively participated in the United Steelworkers Union. Lionel enjoyed many outdoors activities, from fishing to gardening to rock climbing with his grandson and hiking with his wife and friends to wakeboarding and snow skiing; but the thing he enjoyed most and was his passion was road and mountain biking. Lionel was an avid cyclist with the SLOBC, often riding in organized rides to raise money for charities, including the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and participating in the Great Cycle Challenge for children's cancer research. He was an extremely generous man, always looking to help others. He was vibrant, kind, and a loving person who showed his true nature through all his actions. He was an Officer and a Gentleman. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of over 36 years, S. Dana Senes; his children, Ashley Hahn and Larry Hahn, Andrew Senes and Deserae Bryant, and Kymber Senes; his three grandchildren, Troy Hahn, Ruby Hahn and Gavin Green; his sister, Joelle Sissons and Jim Sissons, and his mother, Yolande Senes as well as extended family and lots of friends. He was preceded in death by his father Henri Senes.
