Obituary for Marguerite Fontayne Jolly Hammett

Marguerite “Maggie” Fontayne Jolly Hammett went home to heaven on January 11, 2019. Maggie was born on September 19, 1924 in Okolona, Miss. She was the fourth of ten children born to Joe and Lillian Jolly. She graduated from Okolona High School and then attended Clarke Memorial College and Mississippi College graduating in June, 1947. She married James Hubert Hammett on August 10, 1943 and together they raised five children. Together they served churches in Mississippi, New Mexico and California pastoring and serving families at Southern Baptist Churches in several communities and moving to Santa Maria in 1970. They loved Jesus and exemplified His teachings. Upon retirement, they continued to serve in interim capacities around the Central Coast in Paso Robles, Morro Bay, Tanglewood, Mission Hills and Priest River, Idaho.

Maggie continued to serve others when her husband preceded her in death in June of 1993. She loved to help others in whatever capacity she could. She worked as a social worker in Los Angeles County, Ventura County and Santa Barbara County, retiring in May of 1986. She enjoyed her work as a volunteer counselor at Care Net Pregnancy Center and as an area coordinator for Wycliffe Bible Translators. She is survived by two sons, Jim Hammett of Corvallis, Oregon and Ed Hammett of Santa Maria, CA and a daughter, Mahli Caron of Orland, CA. One infant daughter, Faith Fontayne and two adult daughters preceded her in death, Lillian Rose Culver and Clara Fontayne Johnson. She has 15 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.

A celebration of Maggie’s life will be held at a service for family and friends on Wednesday January 16 at 11:00 AM at the Filipino Christian Church at 410 W. Church St. in Santa Maria. In lieu of flowers any donations may be made to the Filipino Christian Church, Santa Maria, CA.
