Obituary for Mary McHugh Schnabel

October 28, 1922-January 28, 2019

Heaven and the angels joyously celebrated the arrival of Mary Katherine Tommaro McHugh Schnabel (Mary McSchnabel - the nickname she gave herself) who lived gloriously until the age of 96. She went peacefully to be with the Lord, in her home, surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 28, 1922. As a child, she traveled frequently to Italy with her parents to their hometown of Teano, Caserta, Italy. This inspired her love of Italian cooking, and the occasional Italian conversation, that only she understood. She fell in love and married a handsome Irishman, Cornelius Xavier McHugh (Mickey) in 1942. Together they raised three children and moved to Santa Maria, California in 1963. Mary was the “makeup expert” at J.C. Penney for over 30 years. She always believed that makeup could make anything better. She loved her clients and gave them candy, knitted them blankets, gave presents to their children, and donations for any cause they asked. Her family will always remember her weekly Tuesday night spaghetti and meatball dinners where she lovingly hosted dinner for 10 to 25 people and afterward everyone would stay to enjoy an episode of “Happy Days.” She believed that most problems could be solved by sitting down at her kitchen table and having a cup of coffee and eating a doughnut. She enjoyed sewing, crafting with her great-granddaughters, watching all of the movies starring John Wayne over and over again, gardening, shopping for the best bargains, and collecting everything she loved-especially angels. She had a kitchen pantry filled with every type of treat imaginable and made sure all the grandkids had full access. She was always available for anyone who needed help or a listening ear, and the word “no” was never part of her vocabulary. After Mickey passed away in 1989, she met Arthur Schnabel. The two became inseparable. They enjoyed being together, caring for their two Shih Tzu dogs (Boomer and Miracle) and traveling around the country, with frequent trips to Las Vegas. After a 19-year courtship, they became husband and wife.
She is proceeded in death by her beloved five-year-old great-great-grandson, Wyatt Leroy Craven who passed away from AML on October 20, 2018. She is also proceeded in death by her daughter Leda Weissinger, her first husband Mickey McHugh, and her second husband Arthur Schnabel, and their dog's Boomer and Miracle. She is survived by her sons Cornelius McHugh II, Richard (Beverly) McHugh, son-in-law Vincent Weissinger, and her four grandchildren, Karen (Mike) Mier, Lisa (Kermit) McKinney, Sean McHugh, Brian (Heather) McHugh. She was blessed with 14 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
A special thank you to the McKinney Family who gave Mary love and care for the last years of her life. Being in the McKinney home provided her with the support and joy as she enjoyed seeing her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren on a daily basis. They surrounded her with laughter, love, happiness, and joy in the Lord.
A celebration of her life will be held at Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary on February 11, 2019. A viewing will be held at 10:00 a.m. and a service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Donations can be made in honor of Mary, on behalf of her great-great grandson, Wyatt Leroy Craven, who she dearly loved, to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at www.//
