Obituary for Bonnie Jane Sweet

Bonnie Jane Sweet 81, of Santa Maria, CA passed away on Christmas day 2017 from a lengthy battle with cancer.
Bonnie was born in Santa Barbara, CA on Christmas Eve 1936, to Annie and Rudy Agler. She attended local grammar and middle schools and graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1955. Bonnie worked for Bank of America in Santa Barbara and transferred to New York with the bank, for a year. Upon her return to Santa Barbara, she had a blind date with the future love of her life Happy Sweet.
After a year of courting, Hap and Bonnie were married in Las Vegas in 1960 and returned to Santa Maria to live. Bonnie helped Hap with his Texaco Service Station business as a bookkeeper. Hap sold his gas station and in 1971 moved the family to Bakersfield, CA to start a new job and career in the oil industry. In 1978 with an opportunity to transfer back to Santa Maria, the family moved to their forever home. The Sweet home was always ready for an impromptu or planned party with family and friends.
Bonnie and Hap were dedicated campers and enjoyed every summer at Lake Nacimiento with family. Bonnie was one of the “Mothers” as her sister Peggy and friend Margaret were known. The families started out dirt camping at Bee Rock then moved to the main/existing campground for many years before subleasing property at Bee Rock. Hap and Bonnie graduated to a 5th wheel trailer and a whole new world opened for them. They were off to many places far and wide. They traveled yearly to Mexico, so Bonnie could get her supply of shrimp, which she ate every Sunday night. They enjoyed many ocean cruises and excursions with their friends as well.
Bonnie was a devoted Wife, mom, friend and housekeeper. Bonnie is survived by her husband Hap of 57 years, her sister Peggy Bilotta, Daughters: Susie (Sweet) Johnson, Sheila (Sweet) Guidry, Son: Russell Sweet, son-in-law Russ Johnson and daughters-in-law Kathy (Davis) Sweet and Erin (Glaab) Sweet. She was blessed with 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bonnie is preceded in death by her parents, her mother-in-law Haidee Gray, her sister Velma Wood and son Paul Sweet.
In lieu of flowers please consider a contribution to the Elks Crippled Children. A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held at the Santa Maria Elks Lodge #1538 on January 18, 2017 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm.
