Obituary for Lucas Bradshaw Appleton

Lucas Bradshaw Appleton passed away on January 23, 2018 after a lengthy illness.
Luke was born on September 17, 2002 in San Luis Obispo. From early on, he had a sparkle in his eye, a beautiful smile and an infectious laugh, sometime laughing so hard he would snort and choke himself. When Luke was 8 he was diagnosed with Friedreichs Ataxia, a disease that causes progressive damage to the nervous system, subsequent heart disease and is a form of Muscular Dystrophy. Luke was the Local Ambassador for the Central Coast MDA and could often be seen over the last few years hanging out with local firefighters during their MDA Fill the boot events. Although he spent the last 7 years of his life being confined to a wheelchair, that isn’t what Luke wanted to be known for. He was a caring, loving and friendly young man with a positive outlook on life and with so much charm he could get away with most anything. He loved Star Wars, board games, Minecraft, Aunt Dee’s fudge, video games, Doctor Who (especially number 11), crab, his new baby goat Jasmine and all dogs, especially his beloved bulldog Cosmo. He had no problem telling you that Marvel was better than DC hands down, although Batman was ok and the new Wonder Woman was drop dead gorgeous. His favorite Marvel Character was Tony Stark/Iron-Man.
He was a freshman at Central Coast New Tech High in Nipomo and had dreams of becoming an Architect so that he could build accessible homes and buildings because it was just too difficult to try and maneuver through the world in places designed by others who didn’t know life in a wheelchair.
Lucas is survived by his Father, Jeff Appleton of Grover Beach, Mother Casandra Appleton of Nipomo, brother William Appleton of Grover Beach, paternal Grandmother, Mary Arnold of Grover Beach, maternal grandmother Barbara Caton of Arizona, his Aunt Cinda and Dani Bitz of Nipomo, extended family, cousins, friends and those who can say their life was truly changed by him.
We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Doctors and Nurses at Sierra Vista Hospital, Marian Hospital and the UCLA Mattel Children’s hospital who helped during his final days by making him smile, laugh and providing the entire Marvel movie collection to keep him entertained.
Two services will be held to celebrate Lucas’s life, a BBQ hosted by his mother on Saturday February 3 from 11 am – 5 pm at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Club in Santa Maria at 668 S College Dr and a second celebration to be hosted by his father on the same day, Saturday February 3 at 11 am at Margo Dodd Park in Shell Beach. A celebration of life will follow this service at approximately 12 noon at Coastal Community Church in Grover Beach located at 1830 Farroll Ave.
