Obituary for Gertrude May Buma

Gertrude M. Buma
1919-2018

Gertrude May Buma, 98, of Santa Maria, CA passed away on March 16, 2018.

Those close to her called her Gertie. She was born in Hanford, CA on May 20, 1919 to loving parents, Gerrit and Annie Maaskant, both of Dutch descent. After many years dedicated to hard work on their farm, her parents decided a change would be good. They relocated from Hanford to Wilmington, CA where her father worked as a longshoreman. Gertie resided in California for the duration of her life.

Gertie was the oldest of 3 children. Her sister passed away at the age of 12 and her brother passed away at the age of 74. She took care of her Mother when her health failed and then took over the care of her brother who had become a quadriplegic due to a car accident at age 21.

On August 9, 1939, Gertie married Walter Buma in Artesia, CA. They resided in Compton and later relocated to Paramount. As retirement approached, they settled in Long Beach, CA. They celebrated 56 years of marriage and during that time raised 5 children; 4 daughters and one son. Gertie was a good cook, loved gardening, sewing and crocheting. When Gertie and Walter retired they spent time traveling in their trailer and enjoyed fishing and seeing the countryside. She always said those were some of her best memories, they had together.

Walter passed away in 1996 and she lived alone for many years in her Long Beach home until she decided to relocate to Santa Maria to be nearer her youngest daughter and her young family. Living at Merrill Gardens (then Arbor View) gave her an opportunity to do fun things for herself for the first time in her life. She lived there for nearly 15 years and cherished the wonderful friends she made. She enjoyed so many activities there, especially when children would visit from the local school to sing during the holidays and trick or treat at Halloween. She also was very grateful for the care she received from the employees that work at Merrill Gardens.

Gertie is survived by her 5 children, Marie DeGroot, Walt Buma, Anna Williamson, Linda Ott and Helen Schwind, 13 grandchildren (one of her granddaughters preceded her death), 22 great grandchildren and 8 great, great grandchildren.

A memorial celebration will be held at Merrill Gardens, 1350 N Suey Rd., Santa Maria on April 12, 2018 at 11:00 am. On May 19, 2018, the weekend she would have celebrated her 99th birthday, her family is going to have a graveside ceremony at Forrest Lawn, in Cypress California, where she will be buried next to her loving husband.

In lieu of flowers the family request contribution to your favorite charity in memory of Gertie.
