Obituary for John Charles Raynes

John Charles Raynes passed away peacefully on Friday, June 8, 2018.
Chuck, as he liked to be called, was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1927. His father died when he was a year and a half old, so he and his mother moved to San Diego to be in a warmer climate. After graduating from high school, Chuck joined the Navy and spent the next two years stationed in various parts of the U.S. After his discharge, he went to San Diego State where he boxed as a featherweight. Later, he married and had a daughter.
Chuck pastored a small church in San Diego and in 1977 he married Adela and together they had two sons. After retiring from the Post Office, he began to pastor a small church in Carissa Plains where he served for the last 23 years. He loved the people there and cared for them as if they were his own family. He ministered to them, always sharing the love of Christ in his sermons and in his life. One of his favorite verses is Romans 8:38-39 “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Chuck will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He had a sharp wit, a great sense of humor, and loved Big Band music, old movies, fishing and camping.
Chuck is survived by his wife Adela and their two sons David and John (and wife Claire) and by his daughter Charnine Swanson (and husband John), two grandsons, Nathan and Eric Willett and a great granddaughter, Leolynn Willett.
There will be a memorial service at the California Valley Community Service District Building, 13080 Soda Lake Road, California Valley (next door to the Fire Station), on Thursday, June 14, 2018 at 11:00 am.
