Obituary for George Stuart Benford Jr.

George Stuart Benford, Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, June 25.

He was born in Flint, Michigan on November 29, 1925. During his senior year in high school he joined the U.S. Army. After basic training in Texas, he was stationed in Santa Maria and fell in love with the area and Dorothy (Dee Dee) Wood. After returning from his service in Japan, they settled down in Santa Maria and he went to work for Union Sugar Company. He later received a BSME from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and moved his family to Ogden, Utah where he worked for Amalgamated Sugar Company for many years in Ogden and later in Nampa, Idaho. After retiring in 1983, George and Dorothy moved back to Santa Maria.

They were both active in the Santa Maria Seniors Club and traveled extensively. He fulfilled his bucket list by seeing the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore and the Panama Canal. He was a 20-year member of Elks Lodge 1538. He wrote a book, “A Sentimental Journey Through My Life,” to tell his story.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dorothy and his sister Marjorie of Farmington Hills, Michigan. He was preceded in death by one daughter Julie Anne Webb. Other survivors are his children, Marsha Short, Lewisville, Texas; George S. (Sabra) Benford, III, Perry, Utah; Theresa (Steve) Taylor, West Haven, Utah; Paula (Jim) Elkins, Santa Maria, California; Kathy LeDoux, Santa Maria, California, 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and his great friends, Sean and Anne Prosser of Santa Maria.

The family would like to thank Central Coast Hospice, especially his nurse Ronna, for their care and comfort during his final days and would ask friends and family to consider volunteering for their local hospice organization.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 30 at 1:00 pm at the Elks Lodge 1538 followed by a Celebration of Life
