Marjorie Crawford Martin, 97, passed away peacefully May 19, 2018, at home surrounded by her family and caregivers

Marjorie will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Douglas Harold Martin, and her parents at a private graveside service at the family plot at the Santa Maria Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held June 16, 2018 at 1PM at the Santa Maria Country Club.

Marjorie was born at Lucas Sanitarium on January 26, 1921. A Santa Maria pioneer, she attended Main Street School, El Camino Junior High, and graduated from Santa Maria High School in 1939. While in high school, Marjorie was a cheerleader and her mother, Winifred Kittredge Crawford, was an English teacher and advisor to the school newspaper “The Breeze.” Following two years at Santa Maria Junior College, Marjorie attended Oregon State University.

During her junior year at Oregon State, Marjorie was called home to help care for her ailing father, Louis Noiré Crawford; he was the architect of Santa Maria City Hall, among numerous other local homes and municipal buildings.

Marjorie married Douglas in 1943. While he was serving overseas during World War II, Marjorie worked for Dr. L Smith DDS (Santa Maria), Dr. Blair (Paso Robles), the California Quartermaster Department (Oakland), and the California Department of Employment (Santa Maria) until 1947.

While raising her family, Marjorie was involved in numerous local organizations, including: Parent Teachers Association (past president, Fesler School); Minerva Club (holding many offices and a recent recipient of a 50 year pin); Santa Maria City Panhellenic; Children’s Home Society; Santa Maria Country Club; and Santa Maria Valley Historical Society. For many years, she was a dedicated volunteer at the Santa Maria Valley Historical Society Museum, Marian Medical Center and the City of Santa Maria Landmark Committee.

Preceded in death by her parents, Louis Noiré Crawford and Winifred Kittredge Crawford, her husband, Douglas H. Martin in April 2004, and her sister Dorothy Crawford Hussey of Seattle, Washington.
She is survived by her children Gayle (Stan) Reid of Escondido, California; Linda (Ken) Schnell of Clovis, California; and Steve (Esther) Martin of Discovery Bay, California; her five grandchildren, Meghan Reid, Douglas (Amanda) Schnell, Jennifer (Chris) Osantowski, Chelsea Martin, Ashley Martin; and one great grandson, Carter Osantowski.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to her caregivers - Lilia, Nena, Jane, Jean, Loudee, Marie and Christina.
